ROCHESTER - The MCC women's basketball team jumped out to a huge first quarter lead and overcame cold shooting the rest of the way to defeat Mercyhurst North East 68-29 in a WNYAC game Saturday afternoon.
The Tribunes (5-0, 21-0) shot 65 percent from the field and led 32-4 after one quarter. Deja Carroll scored nine, Naje Gibson had eight, and Adre'onia Coleman and Shanice Johnson six apiece in the opening 10 minutes.
Conversely, the Saints hit just 1-of-14 from the floor and committed 13 turnovers.
Monroe struggled from the floor from there on out, shooting just 14-for-52 the final three quarters. but the Tribune defense kept Mercyhurst from gaining any momentum.
Coleman finished with a game-high 17 points to go along with 10 rebounds and four steals. Carroll added 13 points, seven boards, four assists, and four steals.
Gibson and Johnson tallied 10 points apiece.
